Does Turkesterone Actually Work? What Research Shows

Turkesterone is sold as a “natural anabolic” — a plant compound that supposedly builds muscle like a steroid, without the steroid. It went viral on fitness YouTube and TikTok. So before you spend $30–$60 on a bottle, here is the honest answer to the only question that matters: does the actual human research support the muscle-building claim?

The bottom line

Mostly hype — for turkesterone specifically. The one published human trial that tested turkesterone by name (500 mg/day for 4 weeks) found no effect on muscle or body composition versus placebo. Almost every impressive “study” you see in marketing is actually about a different compound, ecdysterone, which has one real muscle-building trial behind it — not turkesterone. On top of that, independent lab tests have repeatedly found turkesterone bottles containing a tiny fraction of what the label claims. Right now the honest read is: interesting compound, badly overhyped, poorly regulated. If you want the ecdysteroid with the best human evidence, that is ecdysterone, not turkesterone.

What the research actually shows

Turkesterone is a phytoecdysteroid — a steroid-like molecule made by plants (mainly Ajuga turkestanica). Ecdysteroids do something in muscle-cell and animal models, which is where the “natural anabolic” story comes from. The problem is that the marketing borrows evidence from a related molecule and pins it on turkesterone. When you separate the two, the picture changes.

Turkesterone by name: one human trial, and it found nothing

The most direct evidence is a 2024 randomized, placebo-controlled study (Antonio and colleagues) that gave 31 active adults either 500 mg/day of turkesterone (from Ajuga extract) or a placebo for four weeks, with body composition measured by DXA before and after. There were no significant differences between the turkesterone and placebo groups in body mass, lean body mass, fat mass, or body-fat percentage. The authors’ plain conclusion: four weeks of 500 mg turkesterone “did not affect body composition.” It was a short, preliminary study — but it is the best turkesterone-specific human data we have, and it was negative.

Ecdysterone (a different compound): one genuinely interesting trial

The study people think is about turkesterone is usually the 2019 ecdysterone trial from researchers in Berlin (Isenmann and colleagues, published in Archives of Toxicology). Over 10 weeks, 46 young men doing resistance training took ecdysterone-containing supplements or placebo. The ecdysterone groups showed significantly greater increases in muscle mass and significantly larger gains in one-rep-max bench press than controls, with no rise in liver or kidney toxicity markers. The result was striking enough that the authors recommended ecdysterone be considered for the anti-doping prohibited list — and the World Anti-Doping Agency did add it to its Monitoring Program.

Two honest caveats even here: the published abstract reports “significant increases” but does not hand you a tidy effect size, so the widely repeated “gained about 2 kg of muscle” figure comes from the fuller paper and secondary write-ups, not the headline abstract. And this is a single trial that has not been convincingly replicated. It is promising evidence for ecdysterone — it is not evidence for turkesterone.

Where it does NOT work — and the marketing overreach

This is the part the influencer videos skip.

  • The bait-and-switch of compounds. Ads for turkesterone lean on the ecdysterone trial and on cell/animal studies. But the one human study done on turkesterone itself found nothing. Evidence for one ecdysteroid is not automatically evidence for another.
  • “Anabolic as testosterone / like a natural steroid.” There is no human trial showing turkesterone raises testosterone or drives steroid-like muscle gains. Ecdysteroids don’t bind the androgen receptor the way anabolic steroids do — the proposed mechanism is different and, in humans, unproven for turkesterone.
  • The product-quality problem is real and severe. Because turkesterone is only present at low levels in the source plant, real extract is expensive — and independent HPLC testing of retail products has repeatedly found bottles containing a small fraction of the labeled amount, in some cases under 1%. So even if turkesterone worked, many of the products sold as “turkesterone” barely contain any.
  • Regulators are unimpressed. The U.S. Department of Defense’s Operation Supplement Safety notes that human studies on these ecdysteroids are few and inconsistent, that there is insufficient evidence to confirm turkesterone’s safety in humans, and that bodybuilding supplements carry label-accuracy and contamination risks (some illegally spiked with actual steroids).

Who might still benefit (and who should skip it)

Who should skip turkesterone: anyone expecting steroid-like muscle gains, anyone on a budget, and anyone who competes in a tested sport (ecdysteroids are on WADA’s monitoring radar and products can be contaminated with banned substances). If you’re a beginner or intermediate lifter, your money does far more if it goes toward protein, creatine monohydrate, sleep, and progressive training — all of which have vastly stronger human evidence for building muscle.

Who might reasonably experiment: an experienced lifter who understands the evidence is thin, is not drug-tested, and wants to try it as a low-priority add-on rather than a foundation. If that’s you, note two things. First, the human trial with a positive result used ecdysterone, so if you’re chasing that specific result, ecdysterone — not turkesterone — is the compound that was actually studied. Second, buy only third-party / independently tested products, because label claims in this category are notoriously unreliable. None of this is a treatment or a substitute for medical advice — it’s training-supplement territory, and the ceiling on the effect is modest at best.
